What is electrostatic air cleaning?

Technical article Published: Updated:

Electrostatic air cleaning is a modern, innovative and efficient technology that can remove harmful particles – such as dust, pollen, smoke, bacteria, fungi, viruses and other pollutants – from the air by electrostatic precipitation. This method can be particularly useful in environments that require thorough air filtration, where a cost-effective and sustainable air purification method is wanted, or where the regular maintenance and filter changes associated with conventional air filtration solutions cause difficulties.

How does an electrostatic air filtration unit work?

The operating principle of the electrostatic air filtration unit is based on electrostatic attraction. This technology, which dates back to the 1800s and is already well known in air purification, is becoming increasingly popular in industrial and residential air purification, as it has many advantages over conventional solutions.

Electrostatic air filters consist of two main parts: the ionising section and the collecting section. They work as follows:

1. Ionisation: The ionising section of the air filter electrically charges the particles in the incoming air. Through ionisation the pollutants receive a negative or positive charge.

2. Collector grid: The charged particles are deposited on the surface of the oppositely charged collector grid. The collector grid is a honeycomb-like structure of narrow channels made of insulated metal plates. These collector plates create a static electric field that attracts and holds the particles, preventing them from travelling on with the outgoing air.

Is it a safe solution?

Thanks to the insulating material of the collector grids, power consumption is low despite the high voltage (9–11 kV), and there is no risk of electric shock.

What makes electrostatic filters better than conventional filter systems?

Electrostatic air filters offer many advantages over conventional filters:

1. More efficient particle filtration:
Conventional filters capture particles mechanically, whereas electrostatic filters offer a technological solution in which particle size matters much less. Electrostatic filters can remove particles of almost any size from the air, including ultrafine, microscopic particles.

2. Lower maintenance needs:
Electrostatic filters are an extremely sustainable solution because they are easy to clean. The plates need cleaning from time to time to maintain their efficiency, but frequent filter changes are not needed; cleaning is quick and simple, which also makes the technology more cost-effective.

3. Environmentally friendly:
An electrostatic air purification system produces minimal waste, as the metal filter can last up to 10 years with proper maintenance. Unlike conventional methods, there is no plastic or other waste associated with filter changes.

4. Energy efficiency:
Electrostatic air filters typically have lower airflow resistance, i.e. lower pressure drop, which means that the building's HVAC system can operate more efficiently with lower energy consumption.

Applications of electrostatic air cleaning

Electrostatic air filters can be used in many environments thanks to their efficiency and low maintenance needs.

1. Industrial air purification:
In many industrial environments where large amounts of dust, smoke or chemicals are released into the air, electrostatic air filters provide the required air cleanliness. This technology is an excellent choice in factories, the food industry, livestock farming, laboratories and other industrial facilities.

2. Commercial facilities:
They are also often used in offices, restaurants and shopping centres to provide fresh, clean air for visitors and staff.

3. Hotel industry:
In hospitality, a good customer experience and protecting guests' health are extremely important, and electrostatic air filters, which can easily be integrated into various ducts, are an excellent tool for this.

4. Healthcare:
It hardly needs explaining why clean air is so important in healthcare facilities. The high efficiency of electrostatic filters makes them an excellent choice even in such sensitive areas.

5. Residential use:
Electrostatic air filters are also ideal for residential use, especially in homes where someone has asthma or allergies. The units effectively remove fine dust, pollen and other allergens from the air.

Electrostatic air cleaning is therefore an innovative and environmentally friendly solution that can be an excellent choice for both industrial and residential users. Thanks to its efficiency, low maintenance needs and energy efficiency, it is becoming increasingly popular in a wide range of air purification applications.
